Cut Flower Care

Cut flowers have a much longer vase life if you follow a few basic guidelines.

  • Always ensure that your vase is clean.
  • Change the water every couple of days and re-cut the stems.
  • Add either a sachet of flower food or alternatively about a teaspoon of bleach to the water, don’t spill it on your clothes. I have also heard that adding an aspirin to the water prolongs the life of the flower.
  • Cut flower stems on an angle preferably with a knife so the stems are not crushed. Remove all the foliage from the stem that is submerged in water.
  • Keep you flowers out of the direct sunlight, away from heaters and drafts if possible.
  • Flowers with hairs on their stems eg; gerbera’s and poppies should be kept in shallow water about 5cm.
